We’re often faced with the daunting question: Can we have it all? Or should we make peace with not being able to have it all at the same time? The modern woman’s life is a constant juggling act, where the moment you feel accomplished by checking off tasks from your to-do list, you’re reminded of yet another task that slipped through the cracks—like forgetting to make those hotel reservations or realizing at the last minute that a PowerPoint presentation is due tomorrow. It seems like there’s always something that needs to be done, and the pressure can feel overwhelming.

Many of us are burdened by the myth of multitasking, which ironically is an illusion. Studies have shown that the human brain cannot fully focus on two or more tasks simultaneously. When we try to juggle multiple tasks at once, we often end up doing none of them as well as we could have if we had focused on one at a time. So, if you’ve ever burned dinner while trying to balance your bank account and respond to messages, offer yourself some grace — it’s not you. It’s the unrealistic expectation we place on ourselves to be all things to everyone at all times. And often, the one person we neglect in this equation is ourselves – but we’ll get to that another time.

Here’s something to consider for now: life is a lesson in balance. The goal isn’t to stretch the day to 25 hours or to sacrifice sleep to get more done. The goal is to prioritize and distribute our attention and energy wisely within the 24 hours we do have. By creating a healthier relationship with time, we can redesign our lives in a way that’s not only more fulfilling but also more sustainable. Start by prioritizing quality over quantity, aligning your schedule with your natural sleep/wake cycle, practicing being more present in the moment and changing your language to I want to instead of I have to.

So, the next time you’re tempted to multitask, remember that slowing down and focusing on one thing at a time is not just more effective—it’s also better for your mental health. After all, a balanced life isn’t about doing everything; it’s about doing what’s most important and doing it well!
